Epithelial Barrier Integrity Assay
The epithelial barrier integrity assay is an in vitro method used to evaluate the integrity of an epithelial cell layer. It plays a crucial role in the safety profiling of drugs and chemicals by assessing their potential to compromise epithelial barrier function.
Purpose of the Test
The epithelial barrier is a key protective physiological barrier of many human organs like the intestine, lungs, and skin. This assay aims to assess the barrier integrity after a specific treatment, by measuring the trans-epithelial electrical resistance (TEER) and/or the passage of marker molecules (e.g. FITC-Dextran) through theepithelium.
The MIVO® Advantage: A Superior Predictive Model
The MIVO® platform revolutionizes the assessment of epithelial barrier integrity by introducing dynamic fluid flow to in vitro tissue models, closely mimicking physiological conditions. MIVO® offers continuous perfusion like the blood circulation, ensuring more accurate and reliable measurements of trans-epithelial electrical resistance (TEER) and marker molecule permeability. This dynamic system allows for a more precise evaluation of how testing substances interact with the epithelial barrier under realistic conditions, providing comprehensive insights into their potential to disrupt or preserve barrier integrity.
